How to Clean and Protect Your Hat

Your hat can be provided with long-term care. The proper cleaning and storage procedures will preserve its shape, fabric color, and fit. Below is how to wash your hat correctly and prevent damage in the long term.

How Best to Clean Your Hat

To maintain the hat shape and like-new appearance, we recommend cleaning with a clean white rag and warm water. If this does not work then use a mild non-abrasive soap to gently wash off dirt or spots only when needed. Do not soak or submerge the hat. Especially the brim/visor as the material could be made from cardboard.

Key: The majority of our hat visors incorporate plastic or cardboard inserts. These will warp, crack, or completely lose their shape when wet. While we have heard some wild customers stories who have washed their hats in dishwashers or dried them in the dryer with success. We strongly do not recommend this as it is very likely to damage the hat.

Preventing Sweat Stains

One of the most common hat issues we hear is sweat stains. This happens mainly with outside workers that are sweating heavily and salt in the sweat soaks the fabric. To keep your hat looking fresh:

  • Use sweat guards or sweat liners
  • Use Scotchgard™ or other fabric protectors
  • Regular spot cleaning will avoid the accumulation
  • Keep out of sunlight when not wearing to prevent fading

Drying Your Hat Properly

After spot cleaning your hat, always allow it to air-dry naturally. Never dry your hat with a hair or clothes dryer. The high heat can shrink the fabric and warp the brim shape.

For optimal results:

  • Use a shaper or a cage for the hat while drying to preserve its shape
  • After cleaning it is best to let the hat air dry

Proper Hat Storage

A few ways to maintain your hat in good shape between uses.

  • Store your hat in a dust bag or breathable container
  • Hang it in a hat cage or on a hat rack to prevent it from getting crushed
  • Keep it in a cool, dry, shaded place

How NOT to Clean Your Hat

  • Steer clear of these typical blunders to ensure your hat remains its best:
  • Do not use an abrasive soap
  • Do not put your hat in the dishwasher
  • Do not wash your hat in the washing machine
  • Do not place your hat in the dryer
  • Do not soak your hat in water
  • Do not scrub your hat with a hard-bristled brush
